Messi moves ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo in European Golden Shoe race

The Argentine record-breaker struck twice at the weekend to take himself two points clear of his Portuguese rival in the race to become Europe's top scorer this campaign

Lionel Messi scored two goals as Barcelona came from behind to win 4-1 away at Zaragoza on Saturday. His brace allowed him to go two points clear of Cristiano Ronaldo in the European Golden Shoe standings.

The Portuguese superstar failed to net as Real Madrid drew 0-0 with Valencia on Sunday, which means their lead at the top of the Liga standings has been cut to four points.

In third place, Robin van Persie was kept quiet as his Arsenal side beat Manchester City 1-0 at the Emirates.

In the Bundesliga, Mario Gomez grabbed both goals as Bayern Munich won 2-1 at home to Augsburg, and Klass-Jan Huntelaar scored his side's third in a routine win as Schalke beat Hannover 3-0.

In Turkey, Burak Yilmaz failed to net as his Trabzonspor side drew 0-0 with Orduspor on Sunday. But in Italy, Zlatan Ibrahimovic grabbed a penalty in AC Milan's 2-1 loss against Fiorentina to move level on points with Aleksandr Cekulajevs.

Wayen Rooney also scored from the spot as Manchester United beat QPR 2-0 at Old Trafford on Sunday, but in 10th place, Seydou Doumbia failed to get on the score sheet as CSKA Moscow drew 0-0 with Anzhi. He now holds a slender half-a-point advantage over 11th placed Antonio Di Natale, Radamel Falcao and Gonzalo Higuain.
