Barcelona midfielder Javier Mascherano believes his side have the measure of fierce rivals Real Madrid after the Catalans' dominance in the fixture over the last two seasons, but says they must take nothing for granted in Wednesday night's Copa del Rey quarter-final second leg at Camp Nou.

Barca won the first match 2-1 at the Santiago Bernabeu last week and will advance to the last four of the competition by avoiding defeat on Wednesday, thereby gaining some revenge for their loss to Jose Mourinho's men in the final of last season's Copa del Rey.

That match remains the only disappointment for Barca boss Pep Guardiola in the Clasico since taking over at Camp Nou in the summer of 2008, and the only time Mourinho has tasted success in the famous fixture, too.

"We have the measure of Madrid," Mascherano told Goal.com in an exclusive interview.

"But that doesn't always guarantee success and we are still not in the semi-finals of the cup," he added with a note of caution.

"The tie against Madrid isn't won yet, but we are optimistic; we have a good advantage from the first leg but it is no good being over-confident and we know Wednesday will be a harder match than the one at the Bernabeu."

Mascherano says Sunday's sublime showing at Malaga, where Barca beat the Andalusians 4-1, will give the Catalans confidence for the latest Clasico clash and adds that his side depend on themselves on Wednesday.

"The three points we won at Malaga on Sunday in the league will give us more energy for the cup match," he said.

"We are working well and now we have to finish the job at home.

"We know that Madrid will give us a difficult match because they are obliged to come out and win if they want to get to the semi-finals, but this game depends on us and if we manage the situation well, we will be in the next round."

The Argentine midfielder, who has been utilised in defence by Guardiola on numerous occasions over the last two seasons, claims he is looking forward to what he describes as one of the world's finest fixtures.

"The atmosphere is guaranteed and the passion as well," he enthused. "Nobody can doubt that this is one of the best games in world football today."

And aside from their first-leg lead, the former Liverpool star claims Barca have one more big advantage over their biggest rivals: Lionel Messi.

"For me there is no doubt," he stated. "Leo Messi is the best player in the world whether he scores three goals in a game or whether he doesn't score at all.

"With him we have a plus point that no other team can count on."

With Real Madrid set to host Barcelona in the first of the two Copa del Rey Clasicos in the midweek, it is always interesting to know what kind of emotions are conveyed in words.

Cristiano Ronaldo has been on the receiving end of negative comments in the past few weeks for his alleged inability to shine in the big games, but Mourinho had nothing but praise for his star player on Tuesday.

If someone criticises Cristiano Ronaldo, he has a problem with me. We won the Copa del Rey because of his goal, and he's scored I don't know how many goals for us. He's scored countless hat-tricks, he carries so much pressure on his back.

He wants to be driving in from the left and running at Barcelona, not tracking back to defend because Dani Alves keeps bombing forward. I think both players will let the other go defensively because they are so attack-minded and then it’s down to who can do the most damage.

"Ronaldo will obviously have happy memories of the Copa del Rey last year and, with home advantage, I have a feeling he will score on Wednesday night."

"I really like watching Di Maria play and I think he’s become so important for Real Madrid in the final third. Whether Barcelona play a back four or a back three, Eric Abidal will be on the left side and he’ll be responsible for dealing with the Argentine.

"Unlike Alves, Abidal won’t push Di Maria back, so this is more of an ‘attack against defence’ battle. I like Abidal, he’s a very accomplished defender, but for whatever reason he’s considered the weakest link in an unbelievably strong Barcelona side.

"Di Maria has the dribbling ability to cause him problems, especially when he cuts inside and looks to slide passes to runners or get a shot on goal."

Xabi Alonso v Xavi

"These are the two metronomes for each side, they boss the midfield. Barcelona don’t have the same rhythm without Xavi and Real Madrid need Xabi Alonso dictating in the middle of the park.

"They have slightly different styles but are equally effective. Xabi Alonso will look to fire quick passes out wide and into feet, but he relies on movement in front of him and doesn’t like to take too many touches on the ball. Xavi, on the other hand, will be drifting all night looking to pick up the ball and make angles with short, quick passes.

"It’s an interesting mix of styles between two of the best passers in the game - and you can see why they complement each other well for Spain. If Xavi wins this battle, Barcelona will control the game and probably pick up a win ahead of the second leg."

"Alexis Sanchez has really impressed me with the way he’s adapted to playing for Barcelona. Big names have found it hard in the past but he’s been superb in the last couple of months and he popped up with an important goal against Real Betis at the weekend. His pace on the run and off the shoulder of defenders gives another dimension to Barcelona’s play.

"He will look to pin back Marcelo if he plays wide right and the fluidity of Barcelona’s attack means he will be a handful.

"I can understand the comparisons between Marcelo and my old team-mate Roberto Carlos because he’s quick, skillful and loves to bomb forward. But I worry about his defending one-on-one and if he’s caught out Barcelona could have the ball in the net within seconds."

After defeating Osasuna 6-1 on aggregate in the Copa del Rey the Catalans will play bitter rivals Real Madrid in the quarter-finals of the competition, the first-leg taking place on Wednesday.

If Madrid defeat Mallorca on Saturday, Barcelona could go into the game against Pepe Mel's men eight points behind the leaders, and Guardiola has conceded that only victory will do against Betis this weekend.

"If we do not react well in the league [against Betis] because of the Clasico, we will be out of the title race. With a rival like Madrid, you have to take all the points. Tomorrow we will go into the game 5, 6 or 8 points behind but we will have to play our game and see where we are," the 40-year-old told reporters during his press conference.

The coach stressed the importance of doing well in the league and spoke philosophically about his team's hopes to retain their domestic title.

"I've said many times, the league is the most important for us because that is what puts you in other competitions. If my team react well we will take more points. We will play against Betis, try and win every game and at the end of the season, see what we deserved," he said.

Guardiola's conference was concluded with the coach refuting claims he would add to his squad in the transfer window - instead stating he will put faith in youth.

"We will fall back on our youth players until the end. Going to the transfer market doesn't guarantee anything. From the very beginning we designed a small squad because we believe in our youth programme," he added.

Barcelona will be looking to maintain their unbeaten home record this season, a run that has seen them score 39 times in nine games and concede no goals in Liga.

	Little more can be said about the abilities of Messi. Put simply, he is a calibre of player that emerges once every generation. He is dedicated, motivated, and has developed from the raw youth with physical problems into a supremely fit, ridiculously talented world star. If injury can be evaded, and he is able to bring further success to Barcelona, he will unquestionably be the favourite to collect the trophy once again. But will the judges lean towards the star of Euro 2012 - whoever that may be?

Cristiano RONALDO \| Real Madrid
	Ronaldo remains, in the eyes of many, Messi's only comparable rival, and his astonishing goal and assist ratio throughout his two and a half years in Madrid have raised the bar not only in La Liga, but across the world. What the Portuguese must now strive for is tangible success under Jose Mourinho - if he were to help deliver either La Liga or the Champions League between now and June, he could reclaim the award he received for the first time in 2008.

XAVI \| Barcelona
	Arguably the finest Spanish midfielder of all time, Xavi has been forced to settle for third position in the Ballon d'Or in the past three seasons. Many observers believe that 2010, and La Roja's monumental World Cup win, may have been the Barca creator's year, and as he turns 32 later this month, he may have resigned himself to never collecting the accolade. However, an inspirational Euro 2012, with Spain bidding to retain their title, could yet make Xavi a contender.

Andres INIESTA \| Barcelona
	Second in 2010, and failed to land a podium place this year thanks to the consistency of his Barca team-mates and the prolific feats of Ronaldo. But Iniesta remains just 27 years of age, and his time for recognition could yet bet in the offing. Barcelona and Spain will once more be pushing for honours, and one of La Masia's greatest proponents will prove integral to the successes of both esteemed sides. Should he provide a moment similar to his World Cup-winning effort in 2010, he could claim the top prize.

Cesc FABREGAS \| Barcelona
	Few doubted that Cesc's triumphant return to Camp Nou would be anything other than prosperous, and what has surprised most has been his advanced role, operating in tandem with Messi. However, Real Madrid offer a genuine threat to Barcelona's domestic and European dominance, and in 2012 the former Arsenal midfielder will need to maintain his form, and indeed exceed his own standard, for Barca to maintain the status quo, to hope to land the golden ball.

Iker CASILLAS \| Real Madrid
	The Ballon d'Or is not an award that has been generous to shot-stoppers over the years, with only Oliver Kahn (third in 2001 and 2002) and Gianluigi Buffon (second in 2006) making any impact in the modern era, but Casillas has consistently proven his credentials as one of the finest keepers ever to grace the game. At 30, he still has much to give, and nothing to prove. A transcendental year for Real Madrid, and further glory for Spain, may provide him the recognition he deserves.

Bastian SCHWEINSTEIGER \| Bayern Munich

Should Joachim Low's charges return home with the trophy, Schweinsteiger is sure to have been pivotal in their achievement.

The Dutchman is utterly irreplaceable at the Emirates, and if his goals for the Gunners can be married with silverware, as well as a strong showing in the Euros, then the 28-year-old could threaten the Ballon d'Or's usual suspects.

NEYMAR \| Santos
	Brazilian football's great hope enjoyed a stellar 2011, guiding Santos to their first Copa Libertadores title since 1963. His annus mirabilis culminated with being presented with the Fifa Puskas award for best goal of the year, a mesmerising strike against Flamengo. But with the Selecao featuring only in friendlies in 2012, and his club future distinctly unclear, it would take a gargantuan feat for the 19-year-old to collect the crown this year. His time, however, will no doubt come.

Mario GOMEZ \| Bayern Munich
	An outsider for the accolade, but his goalscoring exploits across the past 18 months have been nothing short of superhuman. Sixty-three strikes in his last 70 games for the Bavarians is the type of potency in front of goal to challenge the likes of Messi and Ronaldo. With the 2012 Champions League final taking place at the Allianz Arena, and a Gomez-led Germany among the favourites for Euro 2012, can goalscoring instincts bring the 26-year-old the ultimate individual honour?

Chelsea 1-0 Sunderland: Early Frank Lampard strike proves decisive as Michael Essien makes welcome return from injury

Andre Villas-Boas' team keep in-touch with those above them with a very narrow, and rather fortunate win against an immensely wasteful Black Cats at Stamford Bridge

Andre Villas-Boas made just the one change from the Chelsea side that beat Portsmouth so comfortably in the FA Cup in their last match, as Florent Malouda dropped to the bench with young Spanish midfielder Oriol Romeu making his seventh Premier League start.

Sunderland manager Martin O'Neill also made only one change from their FA Cup win, with Craig Gardner dropping to the bench in favour of Nicklas Bendtner.

The visitors almost started the game perfectly as Stephane Sessegnon surged down the right before beating Ashley Cole and flashing the ball across the goal, but Jose Bosingwa was able to clear the ball before James McClean could find the net.

Despite an arguably sloppy start, Chelsea had the lead with just over 10 minutes played. Bosingwa’s right-wing cross was met fantastically with a scissor-kick at the far-post by Fernando Torres, but the Spaniard’s effort cannoned back off the bar, on to Lampard and past Simon Mignolet.

Following the goal, Sunderland struggled to leave their own half, but Chelsea had just as much trouble forcing Mignolet into action with the hosts content to just knock the ball around in the midfield.

Although there was a period of just under 20 minutes without an awful lot to mention, Mignolet dived across to his goal to catch a long-range Mata free-kick on the half-hour mark, but it looked to have been going wide anyway.

As the first-half progressed, Sunderland managed to get themselves into the contest a little more, but their best chance was spurned as Bendtner got on the end of Sessegnon’s clever forward pass before shooting back just past the far post, missing the target narrowly.

With six minutes to go until half-time, Torres went relatively close once again, this time from outside the area as the former Liverpool man turned Cattermole before striking low towards the left-post, but it whistled past the woodwork harmlessly.

The first period petered out as an injury to Matthew Kilgallon ensured play was stopped for several minutes, while the centre-back was replaced by Michael Turner, just weeks after recovering from an injury that saw him miss action for well over a year.
The second-half started in a similar vein to the first as Sessegnon tried his luck with a half-volley, however it was fairly comfortable for Cech, and soon after, Torres went close again himself, firing into the side-netting from a tight-angle.
With the first 45 minutes having little in the way of drama, the match appeared to be coming to life after the break with several incidents in a matter of minutes.
First, Mignolet almost gifted Chelsea a second as the goalkeeper dropped Cole’s low cross into the path of Ramires, but the Brazilian failed to anticipate the mistake and the ball bounced off his leg and away.
Then, both sides had a penalty shout each, and both could easily have been given, as Torres went down after being caught by John O’Shea as he broke into the area, then straight down at the other end, Bendtner found himself lying on the floor after Cole barged through him from behind to meet Sessegnon’s left-wing cross.
However, the best chance of all came in the just after the hour mark as Seb Larsson marched down the right-wing before sliding a ball towards the back-post for McClean, but the 22-year-old was caught by surprise and put his effort wide from five yards out.
Torres soon had another penalty claim as the striker squeezed between Larsson and Phil Bardsley before going down, but the referee, somewhat harshly, pointed for a Sunderland free-kick and booked the Spaniard for diving.
As the match went on, neither side could carve open too many clear chances, with probably the most notable event in the final 20 minutes being the arrival of Michael Essien, making his first appearance since May, while Raul Meireles attempted to chip Mignolet, but the Belgian easily tipped it over.
Craig Gardner should have secured a point in the dying moments as Sessegnon found him across the goal, but the midfielder put wide from close-range, before Bendtner put wide when one-on-one with Cech, gifting Chelsea the win.
